New CWB Site Launched

Camping With Bill has launched our new, redesigned, revamped website!  We expanded our blog to create a community for camping enthusiasts to congregate around the virtual campfire.  Get to know each other, make friends, share ideas and stories, and help other campers make their camping experiences better!

We invite you to sign up by selecting Register under the members tab at the top.  You will have access to forums, groups, mailing lists, private messaging, and more once you do.

We wanted to make this site more of a community site and less of a blog.  Please tell your friends, post a link to the site on other sites you may belong to, and help get our membership going!

People LOVE Camping!

familycamping-1Camping has always been an important part in our culture in the United States.  During the summer, many families take to the road with their camping gear to go and rediscover nature.  We even have fifty-eight national parks that are preserved for campers to enjoy.  In a world filled with gizmos and gadgets, why is camping still so popular?  Here’s what I think.

  1. Camping is a traditional national pastime. Kids are raised going on camping trips with their whole family.  For fathers and sons, camping presents a great opportunity to bond.  Remember your first camping trip, those memories of looking up into the night sky for the first time, unpolluted by the city lights?  The quiet peace of camping allows families to bond.  Things that are left unsaid during the daily bustle finally have a chance to be said.
  2. Campfires are unforgettable. Around campfires, parents share stories of their childhood and pass down their own ideas and thoughts on life, the outdoors, and the nature of the universe.  While camping, timeless folk and ghost stories are shared.  Because we remember those fun times camping, it’s only natural that we take our kids camping during the summer just as our parents did with us.  While camping, families can come together and relate to each other in a way that often isn’t possible at home.
  3. It’s a time to “get back to nature”. No matter how many conquests we make in the business, political, and technological world, many people still like to “get back to nature”.  Camping connects people to a part of themselves that often gets lost in the busy city.  It is easy to forget that there is such a thing as nature.  All that rushing around, trying to pay the bills, and get ahead in life.  Camping is quite different.  There is no rush, no stress, just a sense of belonging in nature that is unique to camping.

Camping can be a fun pastime and a strong family tradition.  People continue to go camping year after year.  And as the world around us may constantly change, camping will always remain a much loved experience.

Camping For A Living?

campingWant to escape from the rut of work/bills/schedules and see the world? Try camping as a lifestyle. Every day is yours to do exactly as you please, you can travel, work seasonally, and rack up several lifetimes-worth of experience. Once you’ve tasted that kind of freedom it will be difficult to go back to a 9 to 5 existence.

I personally know a couple who RVs for a living – working in different campgrounds along the way.  They LOVE it.

We found a great article on this topic here. Take a peek!

Spring Is Coming – I Swear!

SpringIt’s almost here – really – I mean it!  Spring.  Warmth.  Birds.  Outside.  CAMPING!

If you are like us, and live in a climate with four distintly textbook seasons, you’re ready to get out of the house.

I’m sick of winter.  I’m sick of snow.  I’m sick of ice.  I haven’t seen the grass in three months.  Now, FINALLY, it’s going to be 63 degrees tomorrow!  That, added to the 40s and 50s we’ve had the last few days, has melted almost all the snow.  The rest should disappear in the next few days.

I’m hearing birds.  They’re starting to build nests.  Today I saw a chipmunk cross the street.  I bet they’re happy too!

I’m starting to plan our big three camping trips this year – Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Fourth of July weekends.  Book early – the full hookup sites go fast.

This year I am going to start researching new campgrounds to try.  Every year we visit our favorites, but I’d like to try some new ones.  I’ve found the following books helpful.

Happy New Year!

fireworksI hope everyone had a wonderful holiday – Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanza, and Merry Whatever-else-you-might-celebrate.

We had a nice holiday.  Two days after Christmas, it got up to 70 degrees in Pittsburgh.  A far cry from the normal 20 or so degrees.  What a treat.  I know it can’t last forever, but while it was nice, we started thinking about where we’re going camping next season.

This is the time to plan.  Campgrounds are filling up quick now – especially the holiday weekends.  Last year we reserved a campground for Labor Day Weekend in April and got the last full hookup site!

We are interested in your favorite places to camp.  If you want to send us a quick review, we’ll post it in our campgrounds category.  You can even include your website URL and byline for the credits!  Just click on “Submit Article” at the top of the page.

We’ll be adding polls, contests, and links to goodies in the upcoming months, so subscribe via email or RSS (to the right) and you’ll be among the first to know!

Happy New Year – stay safe!

Will the Camping Industry Feel Gas Prices?

Will the Camping Industry Feel Gas Prices?
By Brenda Williams

One of the hot topics being discussed as summer approaches is whether or not the camping industry is going to feel the wrath of the rising gas prices. I feel that it will affect the industry to a certain degree, because I know many people will still go camping regardless of gas prices. Many people though will most likely stay a lot closer to home this summer though and by the end of the summer it should be interesting to see the numbers from the cottage country regions.

Even in my region in Ontario there is a lot of cottage country and with gas prices so high here many people won’t even consider going out camping. It use to be a fun affordable vacation that you could take but with gas prices higher then ever it’s quickly becoming out of the average persons price range. Now there isn’t much the camping industry can do either except to try and entice people to come out to their campgrounds, but do this costs money and then profit margins begin to fall.

It’s a lose – lose situation and without gas prices dropping it will most likely continue throughout the rest of the summer. I frankly believe that gas prices aren’t going to drop and many people will just forfeit camping for good. A dilemma for cottage owners comes into play though because with high gas prices they may not be able to go to their cottage and the market is also down for cottage sales. The prices for cottages out in cottage country are dropping due to people not wanting to travel that far. People would rather stay closer to home to reserve gas than to go to the better areas.

The sacrifices are being made on both the campers and the camping industry but I don’t know if it will be enough to compare with previous years numbers. The industry is definitely going to take a hit this summer due to the gas prices and we’ll just need to wait to find out how bad the hit actually is. If you enjoy camping then I would recommend to you that you try and stay close to home but still get out and enjoy the camping life. Gas prices are uncontrollable and that means we can’t be forced to sacrifice are summer life due to the rising prices.

We will need to make adjustments and possible camp closer to home or use a more efficient vehicle but there are definitely ways to still enjoy the sun and camping atmosphere. More and more vehicles offer either good mileage or alternative means of fuel which means if gas continues to rise, it might be a good idea to start thinking about buying an alternative fuel vehicle. This way no sacrifices need to be made at all, but if you’re still driving a gas guzzling vehicle then you might need to reconsider where you camp and find a location close to home. Most areas have at least a few great areas close to them for camping so it shouldn’t be difficult, but you’ll need to become familiar with the people and new campground which could be a pain.
